The Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) has officially announced the revival of Mumbai’s iconic Sea Rock Hotel, rebranded as Taj Bandstand. Situated in the picturesque Bandra area, this luxury hotel is set for an extensive redevelopment, with construction expected to commence in the latter half of 2025. The project is awaiting final clearances from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI). IHCL’s Managing Director & CEO, Puneet Chhatwal, confirmed that work will begin once the necessary approvals are secured.

A Prestigious Addition to IHCL’s Mumbai Portfolio

Taj Bandstand will become the latest addition to IHCL’s elite portfolio of luxury hotels in Mumbai, joining Taj Mahal Palace, Taj Lands End, Taj Santacruz, and Taj The Trees. This expansion strengthens IHCL’s presence in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where it operates 12 properties under its Taj, Vivanta, SeleQtions, and Ginger brands. With Mumbai’s hospitality industry booming, the introduction of Taj Bandstand is set to elevate the city’s luxury accommodations.

A Historic Landmark’s Journey to Revival

Originally built in 1978 by the Luthria family, the Sea Rock Hotel was Mumbai’s first five-star property and a preferred hotspot for celebrities. After years under ITC management, the hotel suffered extensive damage during the 1993 terror attacks and was subsequently shut down amid legal disputes between its owners and ITC. The property changed hands in 2005 when it was acquired by Suresh Nanda, and in 2009, IHCL secured an 85% stake, unveiling ambitious plans to redevelop it into a world-class luxury hotel and convention center.

IHCL’s Strategic Vision for Taj Bandstand

Despite facing prolonged litigation and regulatory hurdles, IHCL successfully gained full ownership of the property in 2020. With the Sea Rock site now set for transformation, Taj Bandstand promises to redefine Mumbai’s luxury hospitality landscape. Backed by IHCL’s expertise and resources, this redevelopment is anticipated to be a game-changer, cementing Taj Bandstand’s place as a premier destination in India’s commercial capital.
