The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has entered into a strategic partnership with Reliance Jio to deploy a comprehensive mobile-based safety alert system aimed at improving road safety across the national highway network. The system will issue timely alerts to highway users regarding accident-prone zones, stray cattle presence, fog-affected stretches and emergency diversions, helping reduce the risk of preventable incidents.

Under the agreement, NHAI will leverage Reliance Jio’s communication platforms to deliver alerts through SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority automated calls, ensuring critical information reaches commuters regardless of device type or data availability.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the initiative will be progressively integrated with NHAI’s existing digital ecosystem, including the ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile app and the 1033 highway emergency helpline. This phased integration is expected to create a unified, real-time communication framework for road users.

The ministry noted that a pilot phase will first be conducted on select highways to refine system performance before a nationwide rollout. While the current MoU has been signed with Reliance Jio, the government confirmed that additional telecom operators will also be inducted to expand coverage and ensure universal access.

The statement added that the collaboration is designed to combine India’s rapidly strengthening digital infrastructure with real-time mobility intelligence.

“By integrating robust digital systems with high-efficiency communication tools, the initiative will greatly enhance commuter awareness and help reduce avoidable road incidents,” the ministry said.
